SORONG - WEST PAPUA

Sorong is a coastal city and
regency in the eastern
Indonesia province of
West Papua. It is the gateway to
Indonesia's Raja Ampat Islands,
species rich coral reef islands in
an area considered the heart of the world's coral reef
biodiversity. It also the logistics
hub for Indonesia's thriving eastern oil and gas frontier.
Sorong has experienced exponential growth in the last five
years, and further growth is anticipated as Sorong becomes
linked by road to other frontier towns in Papua's
Bird's Head Peninsula. The city is
one of the seats of the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Manokwari–Sorong.

Sorong locates on The Bird's Head (Indonesian:
Kepala Burung, Dutch: Vogelkop) Peninsula or Doberai Peninsula is a
large peninsula that makes up the northwest portion of the Province
of West Papua, Indonesia, at [show location on an interactive map]
1°30′S 132°30′E / -1.5, 132.5. Across the Dampier Strait is Waigeo
island of Raja Ampat, and Batanta island lies just off the northwest
tip, also of Raja Ampat. The large Cenderawasih Bay is to the East.
The peninsula south is Bomberai Peninsula.

Sorong is definitely not a tourist town. The town
of Sorong is a fading oil center, with rusting tin roofs that
stretch along eight km of seashore at the westernmost tip of the
Bird’s head. We can say that the town is fully with disco nightlife
while for daylight activities are strict business. There are some
good beaches and islands to visit. In Sorong, you may also found the
Japanese monument who died here in the World War II and casuarinas
trees which grow in the area.
